Born on the island of Burano (hence his nickname “Buranello”) in the Venice lagoon on October 7, 1706 and died in Venice on January 3, 1785, Galuppi was a prolific and highly-esteemed composer of the Venetian Baroque.Among his superabundant output are instrumental works, sacred music, sacred and profane cantatas, oratorios and sixty-odd operas, many of which are comic.
Among the latter, of particular importance are those born of his collaboration with Carlo Goldoni. It should be recalled that this Venetian lawyer (Goldoni was born, in fact, in Venice on February 25, 1707 and died in Paris on February 6, 1793), in addition to the drama classics we all know, can also be credited with having renewed the Italian comic opera repertory. And, unquestionably, to have ennobled it by bring- ing to the stage characters possessing that sense of humanity we search for vainly in other more stereotyped librettos, albeit by more note- worthy authors.
The refined “Venetian-ness” of both would lead them, in fact, to shape together some of the most resplendent gems in the panorama of 18th century opera: L’Arcadia in Brenta (their first collaboration, 1749), Il mondo alla roversa, Il mondo della luna, Il conte Caramella, Il re alla caccia and La cameriera spiritosa, but also the Gustavo primo, re di Svezia and many others, for a total of approximately twenty-five works.
“Goldoni’s philosopher” Ortolani writes “is not one of those more or less absorbed in the study of natural sciences: he represents instead the so-called social philosopher, that is a strong, quick-witted, self-possessed man, with a solid, sound intelligence above passion and enthusiasm. This honest peasant is not ashamed of his origin and accepts to marry Lesbina - although she is in love more with his money than with his phi- losophy.
He is not a solitary type, on the contrary, he too is one of Goldoni’s cortesani (nice people) and we see him with pleasure on the stage. In representing Goldoni’s typical good sense, he bravely gives his own lesson to the barnaboti (the aristocrats), those “wretches wearing wings and swords”. What is nobility? “As for me, I am convinced - And I know I am right - That social condition is a mere chance.” Lesbina is a servant: so what? If she is beautiful and virtuous, long life to the housemaid too! “My beautiful housemaid, You will be my wife”. This was the smiling philosophy of the eighteenth century and the music of Galuppi accompany it with lively, graceful joy.
